Running for State Office

State Officer Responsibilities
Although state officers have some responsibilities specific to their positions (e.g., treasurer leads fundraising efforts), some responsibilities are shared by the whole team. State officers work together to plan the state conference, which includes contacting potential judges, finding a venue, and scheduling the event. They also plan activities for the national conference and have several responsibilities at the national conference, such as leading state delegation meetings and serving as voting delegates. (However, state officers are not required to attend the national conference if their school cannot attend.) State officers are expected to be role models for other TSA members and to be able to balance their responsibilities as officers with their responsibilities as TSA members. State officers meet weekly by video call, and these meetings last approximately 1.5 hours each.

  1. Students who run must have served in TSA since the start of this school year, at minimum.
  2. Your school must be affiliated with NYSTSA.
  3. Students running for a position must fill out the form below, getting a signature or email confirmation from their current TSA advisor, and the advisor they will be working with the following school year, if they are moving schools.
  4. Students running for a position must fill out the form below and follow the directions on it. This application must be submitted by TBD.
  5. Students running for the position of President must already be in high school (at least 9th grade and be in at least their second year of TSA.) and have already completed at least one full TSA year.
  6. Students may choose to run for President, Secretary, Reporter, Treasurer, or Sergeant-At-Arms. The Vice President will be the runner-up in the election for President. The V.P. candidate must therefore be fully competent to serve as President if need be. Candidates for Vice President must meet the same eligibility requirements as someone running for President.
  7. Each office will be determined by a one-student-one-vote instant runoff vote. Each student will cast a vote for their top choice in each office. If a candidate receives a majority of votes in their office, they win that officer position. If no majority is reached, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated. Votes for this candidate will be transferred to the voter’s next preferred choice (which could include abstention). This will be automated by having students rank their choices for each office.
  8. If any position is left unfilled, the newly elected officer team will determine a system to fill the open positions, if they deem it necessary to do so.
  9. Candidate statements will be posted on the state website on TBD. Students may vote through their advisors from TBD. Advisors will provide the NYSTSA State Advisor with a list of votes of each of their members by TBD.
  10. The results will be posted on the NYSTSA website as soon as results are calculated.
